Joey Lucchesi, a recent graduate of Newark Memorial High School, has been named the Tri-City Voice Male Athlete of the Month for July 2011 based on his performance last month. Lucchesi was the main reason the 2011 Little League District 14 Big League Giants won the Big League Division (16-18 year olds) Championship this year. He threw a complete game, two-hit shutout against an undefeated, in tournament play, Mission San Jose powerhouse team that had defeated the Giants the day before to force the winner-take-all championship game.

Throughout the early going in East Bay Swim League regular season action, the Kennedy Seals Swim Club has performed at a high level. Heading into July, the Seals bolster a 3-1 record (with its only loss a narrow 527-521 to Newark). For a club to be successful, many parts have to be performing at a high level. Of the many, one swimmer on the Seals, Lauren Taylor, has been instrumental in the success.
Taylor, 10, has improved her time in the freestyle to 15.29, breaststroke to 21.00, backstroke to 19.84 and fly to 18.06. Her coaches have noticed her recent improvements.
