Jack Veronin

Jack Veronin, a senior at Washington High School, has been named the Tri-City Voice Sports Male Athlete of the Month for February, 2010, based on his performance last month.

Veronin is a forward on the Huskies basketball team and is the team’s leading rebounder (with nearly 17 boards a game) and shot blocker (22 on the year to date), as well as the second leading scorer (just over 16 per game). Washington is 14-7 overall and 4-3 in Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) play so far this season

Veronin also plays baseball and was a pitcher on last summer’s (2009) Niles-Centerville Senior Little League Baseball Team that was runner-up at the Senior Little League World Series in Bangor, Maine.

He is the son of Mike Veronin and Susie Claxton from whom he gets his basketball ability as his mother played college ball at George Washington University in D.C.

When advised of his award, TCV asked Veronin the following questions followed by his responses:

Tri-City Voice: What is your favorite subject or subjects in school?
Jack Veronin: History

TCV: Do you plan on going to college or junior college after high school?
JV: Yes, a four year college.

TCV: If so, in what colleges are you interested?
JV: SF State, Sonoma State, UOP, U.C. Irvine. Basically anywhere I can continue playing basketball.

TCV: Do you have any idea what field you would like get into when your school days have finished or maybe delayed for a while?
JV: Business is definitely where I want to go.

TCV: Would you like to continue playing basketball or any other sport after high school?
JV: Yes!

TCV: Who has been your hero or role model to this point in your young life?
JV: My Grandfather is who I always looked up to most, even after he passed away when I was in sixth grade.

TCV: Is there any athlete you have admired during your growth?
JV: Barry Bonds

TCV: What is your favorite food?
JV: Spaghetti has always been my favorite.

TCV: To what kind of music do you listen?
JV: Really intrigued with Linkin Park and always have been.

TCV: Do you have a favorite movie?
JV: Anything with Will Smith is my favorite!

TCV: What other sports besides basketball and baseball do you play?
JV: Nothing, surprisingly. I have never even tried another one.

TCV: What do you like to do when not doing school work or athletic activities?
JV: Ride my bike and long board on long summer nights. I enjoy lounging around during the winter and just watching basketball games with my dad.

TCV: Do you have any siblings and if so, what are their ages and what sport(s) do they play?
JV: I have a brother Nick, age 24, and he used to play sports.

TCV: Do you have any superstitions you do before or after a basketball game?
JV: I warm up the same way every game and do the same stretches in the same order. Also, during the starting lineups I hit the floor twice before my name is called and always say good luck to the opposing coach.
