Music is the universal language that can bring people together and in Fremont that force shines brightly through with the Fremont Education Foundation’s (FEF) annual After School Band Telethon. Helping students to experience the joy of music, the Fremont Education Foundation, by its annual telethon, raises funds needed to provide school music programs to over 1,000 students in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades, at 27 Fremont Unified elementary schools.

This year, there are a few changes to the fundraiser. Traditionally held over three nights, the telethon has evolved into a one-evening televised event, on Saturday, May 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. ...

Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) Board meeting report
April 23, 2013

The following are highlights from the Fremont Unified School District Board meeting held on April 10, 2013.

Community Leadership/Superintendent’s Report:
Winners of the 2013 Young Composer’s Competition were recognized during the School Board meeting. The competition is co-sponsored annually by FUSD and the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. Students in grades 4 – 6 were eligible to participate by submitting an original musical composition. Winning selections were then professionally arranged and performed at two Children’s Concerts held at Ohlone College on March 26. The students were introduced at the concerts and attended a reception, in their honor with their families. ...

Butterflies at Oliveira

Since mid-March, the young students of Oliveira Elementary School in Fremont have been bringing in their pennies and coins, for a campaign called “Pennies for Patients,” to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. All of their hard work is dedicated to the memory of nine-year old Lynette Santos, a beloved student, who had passed away on October 18, 2012, after several brave years of fighting her Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL).

The students, by their thoughtfulness are also honoring another former student, Steven Irvin, Oliveira Class of 2003, who is currently in remission from the disease. ...

Irvington students present powerful anti-bullying message

These days, the familiar nursery rhyme verse, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me,” is not regarded in the same light. A lot has changed since it was first written in the 1870’s. People now recognize that you should not ignore bullying or turn the other cheek, because there is power in words and harmful repercussions result when used in a reckless or callous manner. In particular, with the easy access to social media, it is almost impossible for teens to escape negative comments, especially if targeted at them by others. ...

Fremont Unified School District Board meeting report
April 9, 2013

The following are highlights from the Fremont Unified School District Board meeting held on March 27, 2013.

Community Leadership/Superintendent’s Report:
Superintendent James Morris introduced the top winners at Alameda County Spelling Bee. All four students are from Fremont elementary schools.

Supt. Morris noted hot spots within the district as far as enrollment. FUSD has seen the growth of 1,200 students into the district over the past three years. How the district is planning to deal with this will be discussed at the next board meeting. ...
