Two Fremont schools, Durham Elementary and Hopkins Junior High were selected to apply for National Blue Ribbon status, which is awarded to schools demonstrating dramatic gains for disadvantaged students.

Everyone likes or wants the opportunity to be considered special, and that’s just the case with the newly created “Oliveira Junior Ambassadors” program beginning at Oliveira Elementary School in Fremont. Learning the art of diplomacy can be daunting, but putting those skills into practice can prove to be even more so. However recently, 50 – seventh graders at Horner Junior High School in Fremont were up to the challenge, when they had the unique opportunity to participate in an all-day workshop. Conducted by Professor Carl F. As part of the Union City Toastmasters’ “Youth Leadership Program,” fourteen high school students in grades 9 to 11, met for 8 weekly/ 2-hour sessions, to hone their communication and public speaking skills. The adult coordinators who volunteered their time to work with the teens, were Jean Luong and Midji Rovetta members of Union City’s Toastmasters International, an organization created to encourage the improvement of speaking and leadership skills of its members. ...
