Community Leadership - Superintendent’s Report:
Superintendent James Morris briefly commented on several items:
Two Fremont schools, Durham Elementary and Hopkins Junior High were selected to apply for National Blue Ribbon status, which is awarded to schools demonstrating dramatic gains for disadvantaged students.

Oliveira Junior Ambassadors lead the way
January 24, 2012

Everyone likes or wants the opportunity to be considered special, and that’s just the case with the newly created “Oliveira Junior Ambassadors” program beginning at Oliveira Elementary School in Fremont. To add to the palpable level of excitement, the school held a kick-off celebration for students, parents and guests on the evening of January 10.

Ian Squibb, the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Specialist at Fremont Unified School District (FUSD), helped to develop the unique program at the suggestion of the school’s Principal, Linda Anderson. “The goal is to promote kids with leadership skills to realize the potential they have,” stated Anderson. ...

Conflict resolution skills

Learning the art of diplomacy can be daunting, but putting those skills into practice can prove to be even more so. However recently, 50 – seventh graders at Horner Junior High School in Fremont were up to the challenge, when they had the unique opportunity to participate in an all-day workshop. Conducted by Professor Carl F. Hobert of Boston University, a noted conflict resolution expert and founder of Axis of Hope, the students were given the chance to learn invaluable lessons that would benefit them and perhaps others with future life challenges. ...

Toastmaster Youth Leadership soars
January 13, 2012

As part of the Union City Toastmasters’ “Youth Leadership Program,” fourteen high school students in grades 9 to 11, met for 8 weekly/ 2-hour sessions, to hone their communication and public speaking skills. The culmination of their efforts was exhibited during a final competition and “graduation” held on the evening of December 18.

The adult coordinators who volunteered their time to work with the teens, were Jean Luong and Midji Rovetta members of Union City’s Toastmasters International, an organization created to encourage the improvement of speaking and leadership skills of its members. ...

Community Leadership/Superintendent’s Report:
School Superintendent Dr. James Morris mentioned the following items:

Throughout the school year, the district has had to deal with the challenge of the school budget and diminishing resources.
