Mission San Jose High School [MSJ] challenged Thurgood Marshall High School of San Francisco [TM] on Saturday at Tak Fudenna Stadium. Although MSJ had a rocky start, both their offense and defense turned it on in the second half to pull through with a big win.
After finding themselves down 0-6 in the first quarter, MSJ had the ball on the opposing 1 yard line on fourth down. MSJ attempted a fake field goal play, but quarterback Tamim Sarwary turned the ball over on an interception. In the second quarter, MSJ was in the red zone again, but running back Ismail Shafi fumbled the hand-off from Sarwary resulting in another costly turnover.
Thankfully for MSJ, there were more chances to come. Inside the two-minute warning, Shafi was able to cap off a long productive drive with an 11-yard touchdown, putting MSJ ahead 7-6. However, the real excitement of the half had yet to come. On MSJís kickoff, TM fumbled and MSJ recovered on their own 49 yard line. Sarwary scrambled for an 11 yard run, running back Saleem Karim rushed for 30, pushing MSJ up to the opposing 15 yard line. With fourteen seconds left on the clock, Shafi punched the ball in for another touchdown, giving MSJ a 14-6 lead at the half.
Shafi continued his dominant performance into the third quarter, igniting the drive with a 55 yard run, placing MSJ on TMís 5 yard line. Ben Torrez completed the play with a 3 yard run for a touchdown, putting MSJ up 21-6. TM was breaking down, and MSJ was taking advantage of it, as their quarterback fumbled the ball and Eric Gonzalez recovered it on TMís 37 yard line. Sarwary capitalized on the turnover with a 12 yard touchdown pass to Idris Gettani. TM rebutted with a touchdown to cut the deficit to 27-12, but MSJís offense proved to be too powerful.
Ben Torrez ran for another touchdown late in third for his second of the game, making the score now 34-12 in favor of MSJ. To start the fourth quarter, Sarwary completed a 65 yard touchdown pass to Gettani, for Gettaniís second of the game. With the game pretty much out of reach, Aravinda Avala squashed a hopeful scoring drive for TM, by sacking the quarterback on fourth down and causing the change of possession. Sarwary took advantage of the turnover on downs by throwing a 21 yard touchdown pass to James Gao.
With 47 seconds left in the game, Torrez delivered the death blow with his third and final touchdown of the game. MSJ put on a commanding performance, taking home the victory by a final score of 53-12.
MSJís first league game will be held on Thursday, September 20 at 7:00pm at Tak Fudenna against Washington High School. MSJís football program under a new coaching staff has turned itself around this season, and looks to win its first league game since 2005.
