Assembly approves Corbett Prescription Label Bill
Submitted By Sergio Reyes
An important bill by Senate Majority Leader Ellen M. Corbett (D-East Bay) that requires the California Board of Pharmacy (Board) to reveal information that will help improve the health and safety of patients in California passed from the California State Assembly on August 21.
SB 204 requires the Board to conduct surveys of pharmacists and electronic health record vendors to determine whether or not the standardized directions for use on prescription labels are being utilized andÑif other non-standard directions are being usedÑwhat the barriers are to standardized directionsÕ consistent use. Under the terms of the bill, the Board would also publicly report the survey results in 2016 and publish those findings on its website.
The California Board of Pharmacy previously adopted regulations to develop a patient-centered prescription label and standardized directions for use in 2010 as a result of SB 472 authored by Senator Corbett in 2007.
