Senator Corbett introduces bill supporting BRAIN Initiative Research
Submitted By Sergio Reyes
Senate Majority Leader Ellen M. Corbett (D-East Bay) recently introduced SB 836 that calls for the formation of a new California-based research program to complement the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (ÒBRAINÓ) Initiative.
In April 2013, the Obama Administration unveiled the BRAIN InitiativeÑa collaborative project that will map the activity of every neuron in the human brain. This research effort may potentially revolutionize the understanding of how brain function is linked to human behavior and learning, and uncover new ways to treat, prevent and cure brain disorders like AlzheimerÕs, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.
ÒSB 836 will ensure that California is well positioned to reap the tremendous rewards in both economic opportunity and potentially life-changing advancements for human health resulting from the BRAIN Initiative,Ó Senator Corbett said. ÒCalifornia is a global leader in scientific innovation. It is only natural for the state to harness that leadership to advance the BRAIN Initiative and capitalize on its economic potential by creating new industries and new high-paying jobs, while improving the lives of countless Californians.Ó
