Education foundation awards grant
Submitted By the Hayward Education Foundation
The Hayward Education Foundation (HEF) chose teachers, Melissa Sigars and Dena Connolly, as recipients of this yearÕs Kathleen Crummey Grant of $1,000 to build the Longwood School Butterfly Garden. Six raised planter boxes full of lantana, salvia, sunflowers, columbine, buddleia, milkweed, and other colorful flowers attract butterflies. Sigars and Connolly created a sustainable butterfly garden around which the teachers design lessons in math, science, art, English, writing skills, and social studies. StudentsÕ handprints adorn concrete walkways surrounding the planter boxes afforded by the grant.
The Crummey award is given to teachers who attended Hayward Schools and returned to teach in the Hayward Unified School District. Both recipients are graduates of Hayward's Mt. Eden High. The Kathy Crummey Grant and other HEF awards are given to teachers to help fund curriculum-based, student-focused learning enrichment programs. Since its inception 30 years ago, HEF has distributed more than $828,000 in education grants. Teacher grant applications for the 2013-14 school year are due Oct. 16.
