Milpitas Rotary hears about Relay For Life
Submitted By Frank De Smidt
Featured speakers Milpitas Relay For Life Chair Gail Erwin and Senior Manager Tarin Hurst discussed their annual Milpitas event to be held from 10 am Saturday, June 22, to 10 am Sunday, June 23, at the Milpitas Sports Center.
Gail described how community groups form teams to individually raise funds to fight back against cancer. They camp out at the site and take turns walking or running around the track keeping a representative on the track during the event. The Relay opens with the Survivors' Lap. Survivors are celebrating proof that cancer can be defeated.
When the sun sets and darkness falls the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each bearing the name of a cancer survivor or a victim. Each year, more than 4 million people in more than 5,200 communities in the United States, along with additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in Relay For Life.
Gail said their goal this year is to raise $65,000 in Milpitas. Milpitas Relay For Life - www.relayforlife.org/milpitasca
