Business organizations honor Wieckowski

Submitted By Jeff Barbosa

The California Small Business Association and California Small Business Roundtable gave Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) its top designation, summa cum laude, for his continued commitment to CaliforniaÕs small businesses in 2012. The CSBA/CSBR Honor Roll is designed to recognize and award small business-friendly legislators.

ÒThe Honor Roll is a tangible way to show small business owners and their employees that elected officials in Sacramento listen to them and work on issues that are critical to the success of their business,Ó said Betty Jo Toccoli, president of the California Small Business Association, in a CSBA written release.

In 2012, Wieckowski authored legislation signed by Governor Brown to assist local florists by combating consumer deception by large non-local companies who use local numbers and names in their advertisements. The larger company often re-routes the order to a truly local florist for processing but keeps a share of the profit.

The new law provides interested consumers relevant information about the location of the floral business. It requires floral retailers who use local phone numbers or local names to include the address and their place of business in their advertisements. The law now assists those customers who prefer to shop locally.

Wieckowski also carried legislation to expand a 2009 tax credit to small businesses to stimulate hiring in California. The bill recognized the significant role small businesses play in the stateÕs $1.8 trillion economy.

ÒIn many ways small businesses are the backbone of our economy,Ó Wieckowski said. ÒAs part of my ÔMade in CaliforniaÕ initiative, I have authored bills to reduce unnecessary regulations on businesses, cut red tape and improve existing tax credits. IÕve also reached out to local chambers of commerce and toured companies in my District to hear the concerns of business leaders.Ó

Following the November 2012 Election, Assemblyman Wieckowski represents the 25th Assembly District, which includes Fremont, Newark, San Jose and Santa Clara.
