Newark faces Logan
Submitted By Mike Heightchew
With the history between these two schools, even though the game didn't count in the Mission Valley Athletic League standings, both schools wanted bragging rights. Logan's Colts took control of the game in a hurry, just two minutes into the game; Karsten Wethington picked off a Riley Pivin pass and ran it 53 yards for a touchdown.
Things continued to go down hill for the Cougars when just six minutes later, the Colts jumped out to a 13-0 lead. Logan quarterback Jeffrey Prothro Jr kept the ball on a 19-yard keeper. Prothro was able to run the ball at will as Newark was unable to put any pressure on him and he had great lines opening due to a strong offensive line. He was 4 of 5 passing for 110 yards and rushed six times for 108 yards, resulting in two rushing touchdowns and one passing.
As the Logan line took control of the game, Warren Miles Long had a great night with five rushes for 120 yards and a nice reception for a 39-yard touchdown. Newark never got its offense going as Newark's Riley Pivin was constantly running away from the Logan pass rush. To be fair, the Cougars were missing one of their big weapons; running back Marty Leggett didn't play because of a hip injury. It's expected he'll be back for next week's game. |
