District 14 Big League All-Stars season ends

Submitted By Ed Hugo

The District 14 (D14) Big League All-Star team dropped out of the Section 3 tournament with a disappointing 11-9 loss to District 45 (D45) on July 1. This came after D14 had defeated D 45 3-1 in their previous game. D14 was leading 9-4 going into the last inning only to give up seven runs to end its post-season stretch.

Brandon Fuhs played one of his best games as he pitched and hit D14 to their seemingly invincible 9-4 lead. He pitched six strong innings limiting D45 to two earned runs as he scattered five hits. Fuhs also muscled up at the plate as he hit a long solo home run in the fifth inning and followed up with a clutch two-out, two-run double to give D14 their 9-4 lead.

D14's offense exploded early in the game with a six-run second inning that featured run-scoring singles by Ryan Mark and Jeff Chu. But the D14 relief pitching folded in the seventh inning as the three relief pitchers that followed Fuhs combined to throw 47 pitches, allow three hits, walk seven D45 batters and throw three wild pitches that allowed the tying and winning runs to be scored.

D45 squared off against D57 the following night and were defeated by D57 by 4-1, to win the Section 3 tournament and earn the right to play in the Big League Divisional Tournament in Sacramento that began on July 5.
