Thai Classical Night
An evening with students from Wat Buddhanusorn
Submitted By Tim Tararug
Wat Buddhanusorn Thai Buddhist Temple will hold their 18th annual Thai Classical Night on Saturday, June 23 at the Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church auditorium in Union City from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets for dinner and a cultural show are $25 per person. All proceeds will benefit the Wat Buddhanusorn School.
Wat Buddhanusorn, "dedicated to the teaching of the Buddha," offers traditional Thai dance, music, and language classes to all that are interested. Thai Classical Night has become a yearly showcase for the students to show their talents and an opportunity to educate the public about Thai culture.
Tim Tararug, Director of Educational Programming and Event Chair states, "Our temple has a great relationship with Bangkok's Chulalungkorn University, lasting almost 20 years. Our instructors from the university crafted this year's showcase to offer more of an educational experience in Thai culture, for Thai's and non-Thai's alike."
The theme of this year's Thai Classical Night, "Origins, Language, Culture," will illustrate how cultural influences in song and dance from other regions of Asia helped to shape Thailand's own identity. Cultural highlights from Burma, India, China, and Laos will also be exhibited in the performances of the evening. Guest instructors from San Francisco's Wat San Fran Dhammaram and Berkeley's Thai Cultural Center of the Bay Area also join to celebrate the 18th annual Thai Classical Night.
