Historic Mission San Jose offers new Sunday docent-led tours

Submitted By Dolores M. Ferenz

For many years the historic Mission San Jose (founded June 11, 1797) has offered docent tours to school groups and groups of over 25 persons during the week. The Mission is now adding guided tours on the second Sunday of each month at 1 p.m. The tour includes the nine-room museum, which originally served as the padres' living quarters, and the 1809 church, which was accurately reconstructed in 1985 at a cost of $5 million.

The fee for these special Sunday tours is $5 per adult and $2 per student. Children under 16 must be accompanied by at least one adult. Reservations are required to assure there will be sufficient docents available to make your visit pleasurable and educational. Normal hours of operation for the church and museum are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. They are closed New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day.

All fourth graders in California schools study the California Missions, many students building Mission models or writing a required report. The Mission staff is hoping these new tours will better accommodate working parents who desire a weekend tour.

The Old Mission is located at 43300 Mission Boulevard in Fremont. To reserve space on these tours, call the Mission Gift Shop at (510) 657-1797 extension 100. For more information about this jewel of Fremont's history, visit www.missionsanjose.org.
