Supervisors ok park purchase plan
Submitted By Gwendolyn Mitchell/Lingxia Meng
The County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors signaled its intent to join the City of Saratoga and Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District to purchase a property for public park uses. The 64.5-acres property is located on Congress Spring Road, between Saratoga Avenue and Sanborn County Park.
A public hearing will be held on September 27, 2011, at 9:30 a.m., at the Board Chambers, 70 West Hedding Street, San Jose. The purchase of the property would become finalized in October, should the Board proceed, following the public hearing. If purchased, this property would become part of the City's "Saratoga to the Sea" trail plan.
"The Saratoga to the Sea Trail would become one our most exciting recreational opportunities. We can now envision the day when someone can start in the Saratoga Village, walk to Hakone Gardens and then hike up the mountain to Castle Rock State Park and then down the other side to the ocean," said Supervisor Liz Kniss, District 5. "I've been working on this project for ten years, so this day is very gratifying."
The City's "Saratoga to the Sea" trail plan reflects a long-term vision of providing a trail connection from City's Hakone Gardens to the Skyline to the Sea trail, which is a 29.5-mile hiking trail system that descends from the ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and passes through Castle Rock State Park and Big Basin Redwoods State Park.
The property under consideration is currently a surplus property owned by the County's Roads and Airports Department. The purchase price is $1 million, and would be funded by the City of Saratoga ($250,000), the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District ($250,000), and the County of Santa Clara's Park Charter Land Acquisition Fund ($500,000).
