Summer concerts continue
Submitted By Julie Machado
Hayward Odd Fellows Sycamore Lodge #129 and Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) continue their Summer Plunge Concert Series with an afternoon of Big Band, Swing, and Jazz on Sunday, September 4. Held at Hayward Memorial Park, the community is invited to bring a blanket or lawn chairs, a picnic (no alcohol), and enjoy a day in the park with music, art, dance, and chess. Kids of all ages are welcome to come create chalk art. Chess players bring your chess moves or come to learn! Swing with 18-piece big band 3 O'clock Jump, and the jazz group Herd of Cats.
This event is free, but donations will be gratefully accepted by Hayward-La Honda Music Camp, which recently had its 50th Camp! The camp is organized to challenge students in a variety of creative pursuits and is devoted to the development of musicianship for students in grades 6-12. This is accomplished through a program of study, concentrated rehearsal, performance, recreation, and general camp life. Visit www.lahondamusiccamp.org to learn more.
September 11 will feature a Celtic celebration of music and dance with The San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers' fantastic fiddling and bagpipes, Jubilee American Dance Theater clogging performance, and Margaret and Kristoph Celtic Duo (from Avalon Rising). This event is dedicated to the memory of the victims of 9/11.
The concert series is held on most Sundays through October 2 and is free to the public. A tot lot is nearby, as is a lovely hiking trail, indoor pool, tennis courts, and plenty of free parking. The magnificent Hayward Memorial Park is managed by HARD, the premier agency in the greater Hayward area.
