A BBQ to die for
Submitted By Heather Mellon
Help preserve and protect the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery by attending a fundraising BBQ, sponsored by the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery Friends Group and the Hayward Area Historical Society, on September 17, 2011, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The event, at the Meek Park picnic grounds, 17365 Boston Road, Hayward, will feature BBQ, live music, entertainment, raffle prizes and information about the cemetery. Tickets cost $25 and are available by calling (510) 581-0223.
All proceeds support the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery located on the corner of Hesperian Boulevard and College Street in San Lorenzo. The cemetery recorded its first burial in 1854 and holds 2,561 graves, including those of local historical figures William Meek and John Lewelling, both of whom first owned the land. Many tombstones and plots in the cemetery are currently damaged and in desperate need of repair.
The San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery Friends Group's goal is to raise money to restore and protect this historical community treasure.
