Seals Sting the Rays
Submitted By Tracy Uyeda
On Saturday, July 16 the Seals competed against the Glenmoor Stingrays in their sixth and final East Bay Swim League dual meet of the season. Cloudy and drizzly weather conditions set the stage for two teams with a lot to prove. Historically, the Stingrays have outscored the Seals, however two years ago in 2009 the Seals defeated the Stingrays by a margin of only 20 points and outscored the Stingrays again in 2010 for back to back victories. Seals coaches and swimmers aimed for another win this year and also important was for swimmers to improve personal records in preparation for EBSL Championships (July 30).
The meet proved to be exciting with many very close races, a number of which were decided by hundredths of seconds. Kyra Vickery won her 7-8 girls 25 yard freestyle event by 68 hundredths of a second; Lauren Taylor took her 9-10 girls 25 yard breaststroke event by 11 hundredths of a second; and the 11-12 boys freestyle relay team of Tanner Granzella, Kyle Vickery, Matthew Spallas and Patrick O'Sullivan touched the wall 44 hundredths of a second ahead of their Stingray opponents.
Congratulations go out to the Seals swimmers of the week Daniel Chen, Jamie Chen, Kasi Ganesh and Julia Morrison. These swimmers showed exceptional performance and efforts.
The Seals outscored the Stingrays 584-456 and improve their regular season record to 4-2. "It was a fun meet. There was a lot of mingling between the two teams, many of the swimmers go to the same schools. I was particularly impressed with our dives; we have consistently worked on them." commented assistant coach Desiree Fasolis.
Swimmers will wind down the regular season on Saturday, July 23, against the Chabot Marlins.
