Union City National Seniors cruising along
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
In the District 45 Senior League All Star tournament, Union City National Little League has made easy work of all its opponents while earning a berth to the championship game.
After opening up with a 5-0 win over cross-town rival Union City American on June 30, the UCN bats have come alive in two winners bracket matches. On Tuesday, July 5, UCN put a 12-spot on the board against San Lorenzo American Little League in a 12-4 victory. Three days later on Friday, July 8, UCN punched its ticket to the D14 Senior All Star Championship with a convincing 10-1 win over Hayward's Mt. Eden Little League.
Making Union City National's wins more impressive were Mt. Eden and Union City American blasting through the losers bracket. UCA handed Castro Valley American a 17-7 loss in the opening round of losers bracket play on July 1. On Wednesday, July 6, UCA took on San Lorenzo American -- another UCN victim -- in the next phase of the losers bracket elimination games; after a tightly-contested game, UCA prevailed 7-4. One day later, on Thursday, July 7, UCA trounced Castro Valley National 13-0.
Mt. Eden, having come off its embarrassing nine-run loss to Union City National a day earlier, took on the suddenly-hot Union City American on Saturday, July 9, with both sides needing a win to earn a rematch with UCN in the championship game. Both sides came out swinging a hot stick, but Mt. Eden's bats were a tad hotter, eking out a 12-10 victory to advance to the championship game.
UCN and Mt. Eden took on each other in that championship on Monday, July 11, at Union City National's field; results were unavailable at press. Eden forced a winner-take-all game on Tuesday, July 12, log onto the Tri-City Voice Sports website: http://sports.tricityvoice.com.
