FALL Junior A's win D14 TOC

Submitted By Alan Briscoe

Fremont American Little League earned its first Tournament of Champions title since 2007 when its Junior (13-14) A's captured the Little League Baseball's California District 14 TOC Junior title with a 12-8 win over the Niles-Centerville Little League Giants on Tuesday, June 21.

Held at Newark Memorial High School, home of Newark National Little League, the hard-fought contest wasn't decided until the final out in the bottom of the seventh inning. A's pitcher Ted Medina escaped a bases loaded two out situation by inducing the Giant hitter to hit a roller back to the mound. Medina's throw home to force out the runner at the plate was high but Devin Hurtado made a nice catch and stepped on home plate to wrap up an exciting week of tournament play and start the celebration.

FALL jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Ryan Briscoe put them on top with an RBI single followed by a two-out, two-run single by Sammy Sheldon. They added another run in the top of the second as Mark Wiscombe singled home Dillon Weber.

NCLL narrowed the lead to 4-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third. FALL bounced back to get two of their own the following inning, without the benefit of a hit, to take a 6-2 lead. The Giants fought back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Briscoe -- FALL's starting pitcher -- was able to escape the inning with minimum damage by retiring the last three batters with runner in scoring position.

The A's continued their hot hitting by scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead. The key hit of the inning was a base loaded double by Wiscombe that scored Weber and Andrew Jenkerson.

After the Giants plated another run, the A's answered with a run in the top of the sixth to pad the lead, 10-4. However, the never-say-die Giants battled back with four unearned runs to make the score 10-8. Briscoe reached his pitch limit (96), exiting the game with two runners aboard with two outs. Medina entered the game and allowed the first three Giants to reach base, highlighted by a bases clearing triple by Nick Lawrence, before getting out of the inning.

FALL tacked on two more runs in the seventh, highlighted by Wiscombe leaping over the NCLL catcher, who was waiting to tag him out at the plate. The exciting game came to a conclusion as Medina survived a bases-loaded situation with the potential winning run, the hard-hitting Lawrence, waiting in the on deck circle.

FALL Junior A's championship win culminated a week of outstanding baseball by the much-improved club, which outscored its opponents 51-12. The A's received outstanding pitching, led by Briscoe who won all three A's games. The A's relief core of Tristan Cummings, Medina and Sheldon proved to be equally spectacular, as the entire staff posted a 2.88 ERA and walked only nine batters in the 17 innings.

FALL started tournament play with a 19-1 victory over the Newark American Little League Orioles. The A's were led in hitting by Andrew Jenkerson (2-3, 3R), Wiscombe (2-4, 3 RBIs), Medina (2-3, 3 RBIs, 3R), Briscoe (3-4, 2 2B) and Weber (1-1, RBI). They continued their hot hitting with a 20-1 victory over NNLL Giants. Leading the way offensively was Sean Rood (3R, 3 BB), Medina (3-4, 5 RBIs), Wiscombe (2-5, 3 RBIs) and Briscoe (3-4). Drew Garin chipped in with a double, while Weber, Owen Crawford and Brandon Peacock combined for five runs scored.

Congratulations to the 2011 District 14 Little League Junior Champions the FALL Junior A's for an outstanding season: Ryan Briscoe, Owen Crawford, Tristan Cummings, Drew Garin, Devin Hurtado, Andrew Jenkerson, Joseph Lomker, Ted Medina, Brandon Peacock, Luis Rivera, Sean Rood, Sammy Sheldon, Dillon Weber, Mark Wiscombe, Manager Alan Briscoe, Coach Ted Medina and Coach Steve Lomker.
