Union City Police Department

Officers were sent to investigate an in-progress residential burglary on 8th Street. The resident reported that two suspects fled out the rear sliding door as she entered her residence. Responding officers cleared the residence of any additional suspects, while others conducted an area search. An officer spotted a subject running in the area of "H" Street near 5th Street and stopped him to investigate. The suspect was positively identified, arrested and transported to jail.
Officers responded to the Food Maxx store located on Industrial Parkway to investigate a just-occurred armed robbery. Two suspects entered the store and acted as if they were about to purchase merchandise. Once at the checkout stand, one suspect pointed a handgun at the clerk while the other demanded money from the cash register. The cashier complied and the suspects then fled out the store in an unknown direction.
A 9-1-1 call was received regarding an armed robbery at Amtrat International (34015 7th Street). When officers arrived, employees told them that two black males, approximately 25- to30-years-old, had entered the business wearing ski masks and demanded money. Both suspects were armed with handguns and dressed in dark clothing. The suspects fled and were last seen on foot.
An officer on routine patrol observed a disturbance in the area of Appian Way near Mission Boulevard. As the officer approached to investigate, he observed a subject covered in blood, from what was later found to be a stab wound. Additional officers responded to assist and eventually detained all involved parties. Two of the subjects were transported to local hospitals for medical treatment of non-life threatening injuries. None of the involved parties were cooperative and officers were unable to determine the primary aggressor.
Officers responded to the area of Contempo Park near Meteor Drive on a report of a lost 5-year-old child. The child was last seen running barefoot in and around the park. An officer located the child in the area of Santa Susanna and Dyer Street. During the investigation, it was suspected that the child may have been the victim of child abuse and he was taken into protective custody pending additional investigation. This case is actively being investigated.
Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run:
Members of the Union City Police Department and their families participated in the Special Olympic Torch Run through Union City. Union City Police Officer's Association President Mike Ward was given the privilege to receive and carry the Special Olympics Torch from members of the Fremont and Newark Police Department. The hand-off occurred at Decoto Road near Paseo Padre Parkway. The runners, bicyclist and support staff traveled approximately five miles through Union City before handing the torch off to members of the Hayward Police Department at the Union City / Hayward border on Industrial Parkway, near the Home Depot Shopping Center.
At 5 p.m. the Union City Police Department competed with Alameda County Fire Department in a rib eating contest at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant in the Union Landing shopping center. The contest raised funds for the New Haven Boosters Association to help restore extra-curricular activities.
