Learn to curl at Sharks Ice Fremont

San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club (SFBACC) will be holding a curling clinic for beginners wanting to learn to curl and those with some experience who want to brush up on their curling techniques. It will be held next Thursday, July 7, 7:15-9:45 p.m. at Sharks Ice on Old Warm Springs Boulevard in Fremont.

In the two hour session, participants will be taught curling delivery and sweeping followed by a game as time permits. Cost is $15 per person or $12.50 per person for parties of four or more.

Clinics are open to anyone of any age and any physical ability. For those who are unable to bend down to the ice, stick curling is also taught. In addition, the curling is wheelchair accessible and some of the SFBACC members are fluent in American Sign Language.

Participants should wear loose fitting pants such a sweats and not tight fitting pants like jeans. Also, wear warm clothes and tennis shoes. For some participants, a warm hat, gloves and knee pads are optional.

For those interested in joining a summer league at Sharks Ice Fremont, the league will be on Thursday nights for 10 weeks and run from July 14 to September 15, 7:45-9:45 p.m. except September 1, 7:30-9:30 p.m. Cost of the league is $250.

In addition, to participate in a league, you have to be a member of SBACC or another curling club within 200 miles of San Francisco. Membership runs July 1 - June 30 next year and is not prorated if joining after July 1. Cost is $60 for adults or $100 for two adults from one family. For junior members, 14-21 years of age, cost is $45 and youths 13 and under and other curling club members it is $25 for the year.

If just learning to curl, you will be teamed up with more experienced curlers who will coach you along the way. To register for a league, go to the SFBACC website and click on Register for a league.
