Mt. Eden dominates D45 tourney
By Giovanni Albanese Jr.
Northern California Little League Baseball's District 45, covering Hayward, Union City, San Leandro, San Lorenzo and Castro Valley, concluded all its Tournament of Champions postseason brackets this week. Of all the levels -- Minors, Majors, Juniors and Seniors -- the Mt. Eden Juniors club was the most dominating en route to its TOC victory.
In five games -- the minimum it took to win the tournament -- Mt. Eden went unbeaten and outscored their opponents 74-5. In the first round, against Castro Valley American, Mt. Eden was victorious by a 25-1 clip. Next up for Mt. Eden was Hayward West National. It was closer, but Mt. Eden prevailed 15-0. Against Tennyson American in the next round, Mt. Eden allowed the most runs in a game, but still won by 10 runs, 13-3. In the final Winners Bracket match, against San Leandro, Mt. Eden was held under 10 runs for the first time, but still managed a five-run win, 6-1. And in the championship, against San Leandro again, who made it out of the Losers' Bracket, Mt. Eden got sweet revenge with a 15-0 win.
Next up for Mt. Eden in their postseason run is the D45 All Stars tournament. For Mt. Eden Little League, they will likely rely heavily on the club that won TOC to get through All Stars into Sectionals and beyond. All Stars start Saturday, June 25, for Mt. Eden, against Union City National, 10 a.m. at Mt. Eden.
Another local club, Union City National Little League, had a dominating run through their Senior League TOC playoffs. While not as dominating as Mt. Eden Juniors, UCN cruised in their own way, going 4-0 and outscoring their opponents 38-11. In the opening round against Ashland Little League, UCN rolled to a 12-0 romp. In the second round, against Hayward-based Treeview, UCN managed a 7-2 win and a trip to the Winners Bracket final against Mt. Eden. In that contest, UCN allowed a tournament-high seven runs, but they plated 12 of their own in a 12-7 win to advance to the overall championship. Treeview, who won three Losers Bracket elimination games, faced UCN in a rematch of their round two match. It proved to be nearly identical -- and was in the score -- as UCN was crowned champs with a 7-2 win.
In the D45 Minors TOC, San Leandro was crowned champions, topping Tennyson American in the finals. Tennyson won its first two contests before being downed by San Lorenzo American. Tennyson American proceeded to win its next three elimination games -- including an 11-8 win over San Lorenzo American in the Losers' Bracket Final -- before being defeated by San Leandro in the championship by the slimmest of margins, 6-5.
In the Majors level of D45, Treeview Little League made easy work of the tournament before reaching the finals. Treeview won its first four games in quick fashion, topping Mt. Eden (4-0), Castro Valley National (12-1), Union City National (10-0) and San Lorenzo National (11-1) before being upended by San Leandro in the final, 5-3, forcing a winner-take-all match on Wednesday, June 22. And in that game, Treeview bounced back with a 12-6 win to take the title.
