Air rally awards scholarships
West coast high school students to attend Air Academy in Wisconsin
Submitted By Paul Buenrostro
The 47th annual Hayward Air Rally, the longest continually-held proficiency flying event in North America, has selected three California and Oregon teenagers to receive fully-paid scholarships, to include tuition and roundtrip airfare, to the Experimental Aircraft Association's (EAA) Air Academy for the summer 2011 program.
The winners of the three scholarships are Dylan Murphy, a student at Castro Valley High School in Castro Valley, Kyle Wimmer of Foothill High School in Palo Cedro, California, and Paige Westoby of Mountain View High School in Bend, Oregon.
The Air Academy is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and is an aviation-oriented in-residence summer camp for students to develop and explore their interest in aviation. These camps provide the foundation for a lifelong love of aviation as well as the opportunity to create friendships with fellow aviation enthusiasts.
The annual Air Rally is staged by the non-profit Hayward Air Rally, Inc., Originally conceived by the City of Hayward's Mayor in 1964, the Hayward Air Rally's primary charter is to enhance general aviation safety by encouraging aircraft pilots to stay proficient in basic flight and fuel management techniques. The annual Air Rally will next be conducted on June 9-10, 2011, starting from the Hayward Executive Airport and continuing over a challenging and competitive route to Redding, California, with an ultimate destination this year of Bend, Oregon.
