Join me for Great American Litter Pick Up Day!
Director Richard Santos
Santa Clara Valley Water District
Help keep San Jose beautiful by joining me on March 19 for the Great American Litter Pick Up Day! By taking a little time out this day to volunteer, you can make a big difference in your community.
Plastic bottles and bags, fast food packaging, cigarette butts and other litter along Santa Clara County's roadsides is not only awful to look at, it's also a major threat to our local creeks and streams. During the rainy season, this litter is swept off the roadways and into storm drains that flow directly to our local waterways. This threatens local fish and wildlife and decreases the quality of our water.
Along with the threat to the environment, the accumulation of litter with broken tree limbs and erosion in local creeks and streams leads to a decrease in flood protection. This is why I make it a point to raise awareness about the harmful effects of litter and take time to represent the Santa Clara Valley Water District on the Silicon Valley Anti Litter Campaign Committee ("the Committee").
While San Jose's Great American Litter Pick Up Day began in 2003, it was adopted by the Committee in 2008 with the goal of increasing yearly participation of Santa Clara County cities, the number of volunteers and the amount of garbage and recyclable bags picked up. Last year a total of 2,257 volunteers picked up more than 1,400 bags and almost 200 recyclables. This year, we're hoping for even better numbers.
In addition to important donations, this annual event is largely funded by the Anti Graffiti and Litter Program. This program has been a successful collaborative effort among key partners including: the city of San Jose, Santa Clara Valley Water District, the Valley Transportation Agency, Santa Clara County and many others, including cities, local agencies, neighborhood associations, schools, community organizations and businesses.
The Great American Litter Pick Up Day will take place on March 19, from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. after which each Council District Litter Pick Up location will host a volunteer celebration to thank all collaborating agencies and volunteers for their participation. Lunch will be free for volunteers.
The event is part of a nationwide movement in connection with Earth Day. For information about how to volunteer and for pick up locations call (408) 277-3208. To learn more about other ways Santa Clara Valley Water District is working to keep our waterways clean, visit www.valleywater.org.
