UC Premier Fusion wins State Cup

Submitted By Victor Juarez

UC Premier Fusion under-11 girls soccer team captured their second State Cup championship in three years by defeating Mustang Blaze, 1-0, in the NorCal Premier State Cup Tournament.

Fusion defeated Los Gatos United Pride, CSCV Crossfire and Burlingame Flash in the State Cup qualifying round, outscoring their opponents by eight goals and only allowing one. Fusion entered the single elimination quarterfinal round-seated number one in the Gold division.

Fusion defeated eighth seeded Los Gatos Pride 1-0 for a second time in the tournament, advancing to the semi-final match. Facing a very determined LaMorinda United 99 team in the semi-final match, Fusion demonstrated previous State Cup experience and poise, as they came back from a first half 1-0 deficit to win the match 3-2.

The NorCal Premier Championship match played in Woodland pitted two East Bay powerhouse clubs: Union City Premier Fusion and Danville Mustang Blaze. In fall tournament play, the two teams met twice, resulting in draws both times, 3-3 and 1-1. But in the NorCal Premier Championships, Fusion scored approximately seven seconds into the match, in what was most likely the fastest goal of the tournament; it was the only goal of the match.

"We didn't finish on several scoring opportunities, which allowed our opponents to stay in the match," said Fusion coach Luis Mejia. "Blaze made a plausible effort in taking advantage of our misfortune, however we were able to hold them off for the victory."

Fusion highlights from the State Cup tournament include outscoring their opponents by eight, scoring 12 and allowing only four; a four-game winning streak; match winning goals in the semi-final and championship match by Iris Reyes and LeaNess Donn; and four clean sheets by keepers Raena Juarez and Kayla Tahaafe.

The 2010-11 NorCal Premier State Cup Gold title complements what has been Fusion's most decorated season since the team's initiation in 2008. Fusion finished second in league play with only one loss, were finalist in the CSCV Magic Cup tournament, champions of the San Ramon Cup and champions of the Bladium Indoor Soccer League.

UC Premier Fusion's championship team consists of Mikayla Calvo, Aundria Vargas, Kayla Tahaafe, Iris Reyes, Elisa Pelayo, Julia Parnala, Marisol Martinez, Talia Lowerre, Ashley Paguirigan, Haylee Nelson, Vanessa Mejia, LeaNess Donn and Raena Juarez. They are coached by Luis Mejia, Victor Juarez and Tony Vargas and the team manager is Danae Juarez. A special thanks to the Fusion families for their support.
