Lisa Davies has developed a safe and positive learning environment over the past six years as principal of Bret Harte Middle School. Supporting teachers, encouraging professional development of staff members and taking responsibility for the academic preparation of students are hallmarks of a career marked by her kindness, hard work and community involvement.

Davies started her career in education as a teacher in the Jefferson Elementary School District in Daly City, where she taught for four years and served as a mentor teacher and administrative intern. She represented the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) as a leader in education, working on the Commission on Teacher Credentialing Standards Committee and representing AFT on the California State PTA. Completing her administrative credential at San Francisco State University, she became an assistant principal in the San Bruno Park School District and, three years later, joined HUSD as assistant principal at Bret Harte where she became principal a year later.

One of Davies' strengths is the ability to address teaching methodology issues in a respectful and professional manner, often spending time in the classroom to model engagement strategies and classroom management techniques.

Under her direction, Bret Harte Middle School has become known as a place of learning where parents and community members are welcome to participate in site decision-making and leadership. Among the team-oriented efforts at Bret Harte are the School Site Council, the Site-based Decision-Making process, PTS and a Parent Task Force group whose focus is to bridge the transition from elementary to middle school. She also nurtures relationships with higher education representatives to build a college-bound culture at Bret Harte.

"Lisa is dedicated to ensuring all students are offered an equitable learning environment," said Hayward Unified School District Superintendent Janis Duran. "She maintains a sense of urgency in providing rigorous and relevant instruction to students to make sure they are prepared for their next stages in education."

Davies received her award, sponsored by Armas Consulting Group, at the Hayward Chamber of Commerce's 67th Annual Celebration Awards Gala at Cal State University, East Bay on January 22, 2011.
