Give Kids a Smile

Submitted By Melinda Miller

On Saturday, February 5, the Southern Alameda County Dental Society (SACDS) and the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry Union City Dental Clinic will be giving free state mandated screenings and treatment to local kids in participation with Give Kids a Smile, a nationwide campaign combating dental disease in our children. More than 80 dental health professionals have stepped forward to help give local children free screenings and treatment.

"We want to provide treatment and education for as many children of low income families as possible." said Ruchi Sahota, DDS, president of the Southern Alameda Dental Society. "We are so grateful to have this opportunity to serve our community."

Give Kids a Smile is an annual centerpiece to National Children's Dental Health Month, and is observed every year in February by the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and local dental societies. Southern Alameda County Dental Society, in conjunction with the UOP School of Dentistry, is coordinating an access to dental care effort to treat children in the SACDS area.

In addition to the desire of local dental professionals to give back to the community and to reach out to the under-served, Give Kids a Smile now offers them the opportunity to assist local schools with the compliance of state law AB 1433. State law AB 1433 requires that by May 31 each year students in kindergarten (or first grade if it is their first year in public school) submit proof of an oral health assessment performed by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional. We will be providing oral health education and screenings to all children despite their economic status. Give Kids a Smile is designed to provide education, preventative and restorative care to children who do not have access to care.

Kids between the ages of 4 and 14 are invited. Children will be seen on a first come, first served basis. Please arrive early as space is limited. For more information or questions, please contact the Southern Alameda County Dental Society at: or call (510) 782-5442. Give Kids a Smile is sponsored by the American Dental Association.
