Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) and Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL) girls soccer league began on Wednesday, Dec. 8, and Tuesday, Dec. 14, respectively after teams went through a month long preseason.
In HAAL action, San Leandro met Redwood Christian and prevailed in a 3-0 shutout. Moreau Catholic and Tennyson battled to a draw in the first period before Moreau erupted for five goals in the second half in a 5-0 victory.
Arroyo kicked off its season two days later, Friday, Dec. 10, against San Leandro after coming off of a similar 5-0 victory over San Lorenzo days prior. Arroyo was able to maintain their momentum and defeated San Leandro 1-0. San Lorenzo faced off against Tennyson in a hard fought match that was tied until late in the game when San Lorenzo made a push and won by two goals, 5-3.
Hayward teams entered the second week of their season on Monday, Dec. 13. San Leandro faced off against Mt. Eden in a 2-1 victory. Arroyo leaned on its defense once again after shutting out San Leandro the week before in a 4-0 victory over Pittsburg.
Two days later, Arroyo played against Hayward and allowed its first goal in three games after Hayward scrambled the Arroyo defense and scored a late goal to avoid a 5-0 shutout. San Leandro also continued its winning ways after blowing its game against Tennyson wide open in the second half, scoring four straight goals for a 5-0 shutout. Arroyo and Alhambra rounded off HAAL's second week of girls soccer with a back and forth match. Arroyo leaned on its defense and prevailed with a 1-0 victory and a five game winning streak. In their win streak, Arroyo has scored 16 goals and only let one in.
On the MVAL side of things, American faced Newark Memorial to kick start their season. American had the momentum going into the match after coming into the season with a 5-2 preseason and a two game win streak and was able to continue its winning ways in a 2-1 victory over Newark. Kennedy met Mission San Jose but was defeated 3-1 after Mission San Jose made a late two-goal push to pull away.
To finish off the first day of MVAL girls soccer, Washington faced off against Logan in a competitive match. Washington led Logan 2-1 going into the second period but the Logan offense exploded in the second period for 4 unanswered goals and the 5-2 victory.
Two days later, Thursday, Dec. 16, Logan continued its momentum in a 2-1 victory over Irvington. Washington's Lady Huskies righted their ship and dismantled the Kennedy Titans 4-1. American tried to further their three game win streak but ran into a stout and ready Warriors defense. No goals were scored in the first half and the two teams stayed even in the second with a goal each for a 1-1 tie.
Logan leads the MVAL with a 2-0-0 record, with Mission San Jose and American close behind at 1-0-1. Arroyo is the clear leader in HAAL play at 2-0-0 and has a five game win streak (dating back to preseason.) San Lorenzo is second in rankings at 1-0-0, but has not played enough games to truly prove itself. San Leandro rounds things off at 3-1-0, good for third place.
