Melinda Cervantes, Executive Director of the Santa Clara County Library Joint Powers Authority (JPA) and Santa Clara County Librarian, has been honored with the 2010 California Library Association Member of the Year Award. The recognition highlights her active and innovative leadership in service to California communities.
Cervantes has represented California libraries in regional, statewide and national library advocacy efforts. Under her leadership, Santa Clara County Library has been recognized by Hennen's American Public Library Ratings and Library Journal's Star Libraries as one of the nation's leading libraries for delivering outstanding and cost effective service.
The Santa Clara County Library includes two book mobiles, an online library, seven community libraries and one branch library serving Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Milpitas, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Saratoga and the unincorporated areas of the County. The system has a collection of 1.8 million items, 290,985 library card holders and has recorded 12,066,869, check outs.
"From streaming music for smartphones to imaginatively reconfigured new facilities, Melinda leads by example in meeting California community needs through community engagement, strategically deployed staff and fiscal resources," said California Library Association President Kim Bui-Burton. "Her support for professional learning and involvement by staff and new library leaders was highlighted in her nomination, as expressed through staff participation in CLA activities, presentations and conferences and lectures at local library and information science programs."
"I am very grateful to the California Library Association for this honor," said Cervantes, who is the 2010-11 Chair of the Urban Libraries Council Board, and past Chair of California Library Association's Legislative Committee and the Public Library Association's Legislative Committee. "This honor reflects the strong support I receive from the profession and dedicated Santa Clara County Library employees that take our mission to heart."
