HAAL hoops roundup
By Nick Zambrano
The 2010 hoops season has gotten underway in the Hayward Area Athletic League (HAAL) and already teams have begun to show signs of promise.
Hayward High boys team was on the short end of their season opener against San Marin High. The Farmers dropped the Dec. 2 showdown, 64-53. It's the second straight season that Hayward has lost their season opener as well their home opener. Hayward is still looking to recapture the glory of their 2008-09 season, a season in which they made a deep run into the North Coast Section Division II. Last year, Hayward finished 14-12 and finished fourth in the HAAL.
Hayward will attempt to rebound from the San Marin affair with their second straight home game on Dec. 11. They'll square off with Alameda High at 7 p.m.
The Moreau Catholic Mariners won their first game under new head coach Frank Knight. A 54-46 handling of San Rafael High marked the beginning of what Mariner fans hope to be a winning season. In the past three years, Moreau has a combined win total of only 23 games.
Knight and the Mariners won't have much time to rest. They will leap directly into the 2010 HAAL pool when they hit the road and play Mt. Eden on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
After they finished the 2009-10 season looking up at Bishop O'Dowd High, the 2010 Lady Mariners came out with their guns blazing. Before their most recent loss - a 63-29 thumping by St. Mary's High in the Marin Catholic Lady Cat Classic - ripped off wins in their first two games.
In game one of the new campaign, Moreau came out on the winning end of a tight battle with Mission High, 49-47. Game two provided the Lady Mariners with just a bit more space, this time narrowly escaping Ursuline High, 64-60.
Anchored by senior powerhouse Megan Scully, Moreau returns seven players from the '09 season. Scully and company will get the ball bouncing with their next contest - the HAAL opener - against Mt. Eden on Dec. 7.
