Local athletics to watch this weekend
With nearly all fall athletic matches in the past - only Milpitas High School's tennis duo of Vivian Nguyen and Christi Tain remain alive (taking on Ruri Kobayakawa and Wendi Kong of Monta Vista High School in the Central Coast Section tournament semifinals Dec. 6 at noon in Los Gatos) - the focus shifts to winter athletics: basketball, soccer and wrestling.
Heading into the weekend there are a number of intriguing local games to be aware of.
On Friday, Dec. 3, Chabot College men's basketball will be in Sacramento for the first day of the Cosumnes River College two-day tournament; Chabot's Lady Gladiator basketball team will be at Contra Costa College for the first day of a two-day tourney.
In high school sports on Friday, the majority of the action will come on the hardwood with a number of tournaments. For the boys, Washington High School will be hosting its own tournament, while on the girls side, Irvington High School hosts their own tourney.
Elsewhere, for boys, local teams will be at the Straw Hat Classic, Redwood Classic, Jeremy Jack Tournament, McKinleyville Tournament and Hogan High School Tourney. Elsewhere for the girls, local teams will be at the Sister Grevaise Tourney, Marin Catholic Tournament, Lincoln Mustang Tourney and Fremont (Sunnyvale) Tournament.
Moving into Saturday, Dec. 4, in collegiate action, Chabot's basketball teams will conclude their respective tournaments in basketball while the men's wrestling club will be at the Northern California Regional Community College Tournament in Modesto.
In high school action, all the aforementioned basketball tournaments will be wrapping up, while a number of schools throughout the area will play in individual regular season games. Outside of the basketball court, there will be a few soccer matches and a significant amount of wrestling.
Most notably, Newark Memorial High School will be hosting its annual Ironman Rotary Duals. Elsewhere, local teams will be at the Bare Bones Tourney at John Swett High, Lady Royals Tournament at Overfelt High and the Falcon Duals Meet at Freedom High.
