As part of Mission Valley Regional Occupational Program's (MVROP's) Green Initiative, staff and students have been re-evaluating daily activities and infusing a more eco-conscious approach to education.
These efforts include: the reduction of power consumption by using innovative network technology equipment which reduces the amount of CPUs needed in classrooms, partnering with green businesses to focus on new job markets such as solar technology, and having Biotechnology students synthesize bio-diesel from 100 percent pure unused vegetable oil.
The latest example of students taking ownership of the green concept could be seen on October 30, when students of the Mission Valley ROP SkillsUSA Forensics Chapter came together to hold an Electronic Waste Recycling event for the community. At the event, students flexed their creativity while collecting old electronic equipment from the public to help fundraise for their SkillsUSA competitions taking place throughout the year. The event was a true success as students provided a valuable community service to prevent further damage to the environment.
