California School for the Deaf Open House

Submitted By Richard Medugno

The California School for the Deaf (CSD) in Fremont is inviting parents of deaf and hard of hearing children, American Sign Language (ASL) students from colleges and high schools, CSD alumni, and the general public to an open house on Thursday, November 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

"CSD has an international reputation for its expertise in educating Deaf children, so many have asked to visit the school," said Dr. Hank Klopping, the School Superintendent. "Our Open House is an excellent time for everyone to come to the campus."

Aside from monthly public educational tours, the annual open house is a rare chance to see the school in action. "This is a great opportunity for our community members to see our outstanding educational programs for Deaf students, provided by highly qualified teachers and staff members through American Sign Language and English," said Laura Peterson, Director of Instruction.

Traditionally, CSD's Open House is a festive occasion where visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and exhibits. Activities will include a variety show, a deaf services fair, and more. Students will present the variety show in American Sign Language in the school's Little Theater at 10:30 a.m. Seating is limited; so those who come first will be issued free tickets.

The Deaf Services Faire featuring organizations and agencies from the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond will be located in the gym. It will include a number of exhibitors.

Invited exhibitors include: ASLWAVE, Bay Area Coalition of Deaf Senior Citizens, California Association of the Deaf, California Telephone Access Program, CAN Telecom, Center for Independent Living, Computer Technologies Program, Deaf Bilingual Coalition, Grizzly Camp, Family and Children Services, San Francisco Public Library, Purple, Sorensen, and others.

Food and crafts will be available on campus sold by student organizations.

If you can't visit the school on Veteran's Day, you can visit CSD during one of its monthly tours: http://www.csdeagles.com/outreach/tour.php. For school district personnel, educational tours can be arranged at any time of the year. For families with deaf and hard of hearing children interested in seeing CSD, tailored educational tours can be arranged at their convenience. CSD was established 151 years ago and has an international reputation for its quality and accredited education. As a state-funded public school for students who are deaf and hard of hearing living in Northern California, it provides students with language-rich environment, cutting edge literacy education and best practices.
