95 MVU White girls take third
Submitted By coach Terry Dalziel
Mission Valley United's 95 MVU White girls soccer club scored six goals while giving up only two and shutting out three opponents en route to a third-place finish at the District 2 Cup held in Sunnyvale over the weekend of Oct. 23 and 24.
In four matches, MVU went unbeaten, with a two wins and two draws. To begin play, MVU and Almaden Valley Xtreme battled to a scoreless draw. MVU followed up that with a 3-0 win against the Santa Cruz City Jaws 95. Monica Dunn scored two goals; Dinaz Bamji scored one; and Mayron Mulugeta had two assists.
In the third game (the first match on Sunday), MVU needed a victory to play in the championship game - a draw would put them in the consolation match. MVU went up 2-0 in the match but could not hold it against a very talented Sunnyvale Dynamites team.
Kendra Maclure headed home MVU's first goal off a Raylene Gould corner kick. Bamji scored the second. The game ended in a 2-2 draw and MVU was off to the consolation game.
The consolation game had the most exciting ending to a great played game. It was 0-0 at the end of regulation and two five-minute overtime periods were to be played with a golden goal rule. Two minutes into the first overtime period Gould won the ball near midfield and sent a long ball toward the left corner flag. Dunn began a sprint down the line toward the ball and saved it from going out the end line. She then made a terrific cross to a sprinting Bamji who redirected the ball past the goal keeper and into the net for the victory.
Solid defense was played by Elim Yang, Rupsha Panda, Desiree Jones, Kalliyan Heng and Patricia Garcia. Goalkeeper Jessica Mcnair played outstanding in the goal making several key saves and recording three shutouts. It was a great result for a team that has worked hard to play at a higher level.
