Trot, jog or saunter to the second annual Mutt Strut Fundraiser. Sponsored by the New Haven Schools Foundation, dogs will parade, sashay, and walk enthusiastically on the track at the Masonic Home. Naturally, the "mutts" will escort their handlers. "Dog-less" runners can partake as well.

Following registration, the "race" begins as dogs of all sizes get their daily exercise. The registration fee covers a family of up to four, plus one dog including one each of a t-shirt, BBQ lunch (additional tickets $5 each), goodie bag, drawing ticket (extra tickets $1 each or 6/$5), and doggie games. Conviviality is the essence of the day as dogs enjoy each other; surprisingly, barking is at a minimum.

After the race, "Doggie Games" begin and continue the fun. Games are organized by dog sizes: small, medium, and large; each category will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizewinners. Spectators and non-competitive dogs are urged to cheer on four-legged contestants, especially in the "Hot Dog Dunking Contest." Hot dogs are cut into pie tin dishes filled with a bit of water and lined up on one side. Across from each other, dogs and owners run to a dish; the first dog to finish the treats is the winner.

A "King & Queen Parade" will allow each dog to parade its best assets in a bid to be crowned for the day and the "Musical Chair Challenge" tests human and canine companions to find a place to sit together when the music stops. Spectators are urged to stay through the finale, a "Doggie Costume Contest" to determine which dog has been dressed the best for the day.

Music adds to the ambience as volunteer disk jockey, Jay Bennett will spin tunes (his day job is driving for Tri-CED Community Recycling). Allied Waste will provide the BBQ grill and Chef Fred Penning will prepare mouth-watering delights. To quench thirst during the activities, the Sikh community in Union City is providing bottled water.

Youth volunteers will be a strong contingent at Mutt Strut. Students from Logan High School and Leos from the UC Lions club will be busy helping out. Union City Explorers will also help out.

Major sponsors of Mutt Strutt are Masonic Homes of CA and Tri-CED Community Recycling.
