'New York, New York' honors Starstruck founder

By Eman Isadiar

Fans of the performing arts are anxiously awaiting Sunday, October 17, the night of the black-tie event that has been creating quite a buzz around town. Fremont Symphony is hosting "New York, New York," a Broadway-inspired gala dinner at the Fremont/Newark Hilton in honor of Lori Stokes, founder and artistic director of StarStruck Theatre.

"Since she started StarStruck Theatre 15 years ago, Lori Stokes has brought a slice of Broadway to Fremont," says event chair and Fremont Symphony board member Terry Alderete. "She has not only taught and mentored hundreds of young, aspiring performers, but has inspired thousands more in the audience."

The event will showcase a number of StarStruck's talented young stars who will perform such Broadway classics as "Memory" from "Cats," "Heart Full Of Love" from "Les Miserables" and "Broadway Baby" from "Follies."

Known for his strong support of the performing arts, Fremont Vice Mayor, Bob Wieckowski will be the master of ceremonies for this special gala celebration, and will even join the young performers as the famous radio personality Burt Healey from the show "Annie" in the number "Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile."

The evening will begin with a reception and hors d'oeuvres at 6 p.m. with Broadway tunes by Jazz pianist Steve Pietkiewicz, co-president of Fremont Symphony Orchestra. Then will follow a gourmet dinner a la Sardi's and entertainment by StarStruck Theatre.

There will also be a live auction featuring a luxurious one-week vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, among many other prizes, vacation, and entertainment packages.

A limited number of sponsorship opportunities are still available for businesses and corporations wishing to support the performing arts in Fremont.

The host organization, Fremont Symphony Orchestra, is the oldest and most prominent professional cultural arts organization in the area and performs evening subscription concerts featuring classical symphonic music as well as pops programs, instrumental and vocal recitals, and educational concerts for school-age children in Fremont, Newark, Union City and Milpitas school districts.

Since 2005, Fremont Symphony has also performed a fully staged production of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet each year with Yoko's Dance and Performing Arts Academy. The organization was founded in 1964 and is now a fully professional symphony under the direction of Maestro David Sloss who is now in his 31st season as conductor and music director.

Proceeds will benefit the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. For tickets and information, please visit http://www.fremontsymphony.org or call (510) 371-4859.
