Letter to the editor: Fremont's Showcase

After praising the artwork on the pending skateboard Park on Sept 14th, the City Council members took their voting positions and not surprisingly after a ready ... shoot ... aim process, they all shot themselves in the foot. It is outrageously inconsiderate let alone irresponsible to stick a public, unsupervised and freely-accessible skateboard park, open daily until at least 10 p.m. every night into a quiet residential area when a site that benefits everyone is readily available and has been acknowledged by the City to be doable and on schedule.

If the pending Skateboard Park is so great, why can't it be made the showcase for Fremont by implementing [its construction] near the corner of Stevenson Blvd and Paseo Padre Parkway? The visibility is much better than the site a mile away on the remote edge of Central Park next to the Waterpark. The corner site would also be much preferred in that it is properly away from all residences and over 100 parking spaces at the nearby knoll are available year around (these parking spaces have been wasted for years!).

The impact of an improper decision will eventually be felt by all. Just the negative impact on the revenue generating Waterpark will be obvious when it has to compete for limited parking during a skateboard park expo that begins before the Waterpark opens for the day. Council members have no insight as to what happens 24/7 in the Waterpark area and are not even aware (or don't care) that parking is already a major problem on hot summer weekends.

Please do not be a silent majority. Help to put the skateboard park in a location where everyone will appreciate it. Voice your concerns before it is too late to those in your community as well as to:

City of Fremont manager (
