Alsion Montessori Foundation held its first Annual Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday, September 18 at the Best House located within Palmdale Estates in Fremont. The foundation, in existence since 2000, is a non-profit organization that has implemented a successful, self-supporting Montessori-based Middle School, including its Early College High School program. In an effort to promote and publicize the school, an annual scholarship luncheon was launched this year to raise funds for partial scholarships and improved facilities.
This year's event honored Col. Garrett Yee, member of the Ohlone College Board of Trustees and long time supporter of the Montessori Community. He was instrumental in obtaining key approvals that allowed Alsion Montessori Middle-High School and Early College Program to open in its new home next to the Ohlone College campus in 2008.
Notable members of the community in attendance included former Assemblymember John A. Dutra, former State Senator Liz Figueroa, former Fremont Councilmember Steve Cho, FUSD School Board President Lara York, Ohlone College Trustee John Weed, and Ohlone Foundation Board Members Jan Vincent and Jim Klent. Sharon Yap, assisted by members of Alsion Montessori Foundation's Fundraising Committee, coordinated the event.
