Prep girls tennis and volleyball roundup

Irvington High School's wins against James Logan and Washington high schools improved its Mission Valley Athletic League record to 2-2. On Tuesday, Sept. 28, strong doubles play helped Irvington overcome MVAL foe James Logan. After falling behind and losing the first set, 4-6, Irvington's Vida Bao and Jamie Lagman took the last sets 6-2, 6-4 against Allison Thach and Jasmine Bautista. Mane Ohanyan and Shilpa Sharma of Irvington beat Cheryl Chung and Jessica Bautista 6-2, 7-5 and Karina Uchiumi and Abigail Gracia won against Logan's Marycon Jiro and Jeena Villamor 6-3, 6-3.
The schools split their singles matches. James Logan's Hillary Trvong beat Sarena Bui 6-3, 6-4. Courtney Reyes defeated Irvington's Tanveer Malhi 6-4, 6-0. Aparna Dhinakaran of Irvington won against Marjorie Bartolome 6-3, 6-2. Congrui Lin earned a win for Irvington and beat Pavla Bvlvyut 6-3, 6-1.
Irvington leaned on its doubles players again to win against Washington. This time it was Uchiumi and Gracia who survived despite dropping the first set, beating Ruby Miu and Angelica Cayabab 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Washington singles players Lauren Hishinuma and Madison Jeong needed three sets each to win against Bui (7-5, 6-7, 6-1) and Malhi (6-3, 2-6, 6-1). Dhinakaran beat Washington's Alice Pham 7-5, 6-2 and Irvington's Congrui Lin defeated Liann Bressier 6-4, 6-2.
Moreau Catholic High School handled two Hayward Area Athletic League teams to improve its league record to 6-1. Nicole Dawang, Moreau Catholic's number one-seeded player defeated Arroyo High School's Diana Ho 7-5, 6-0; Jana Lee swept Tiffany Chang of Arroyo 6-0, 6-0; Lei Ahn Drake defeated Arroyo's Waiman Tran 2-6, 7-6, 6-3; and Moreau Catholic's Lisa Wilson gave up one game against Sarah Tekawa 6-0, 6-1.
Dons' doubles partners Michelle Chiang and Amanda Robinson prevented a Mariner sweep by beating Victoria Vergara and Tricia Dones 6-1, 7-5. Dumpit and Blanco of Moreau Catholic beat Stephanie Chuc and Kimmarie Pagdanganan 7-5, 6-1. Janet Mo and Joana Juan fell to Mariners Eleanor Labarbera and Marissa Phelan 6-3, 6-3.
Naeemah Charles of Mt. Eden beat Lei Ahn Drake 6-2, 6-3 for Mt. Eden's only win against the Mariners. Moreau Catholic's Dawang beat Vivian Dien 6-1, 6-0; Lee earned a win against Mt. Eden's Kristen Saclolo 6-1, 6-0; and Wilson swept Thi Truong of Mt. Eden 6-0, 6-0.
High School Girls Volleyball
Newark Memorial beat American 25-21, 25-12, 25-22 in Mission Valley Athletic League play. Junior Taylor Presley had 22 digs and Libby Snyder setup 26 assists along with her 12 digs and earned one ace. Newark Memorial is 6-2 overall.
American's five-set victory (18-25, 25-16, 25-21, 16-25, 10-15) against Mission San Jose was its seventh win this season. Anderian Carbonel led the team with 18 kills and teammate Olivia Downing recorded 33 assists. American is 2-2 against MVAL teams.
Castro Valley beat Mt. Eden and San Leandro in the Hayward Area Athletic League. Sophomore Allie Redmond led Castro Valley in kills (11) and Brooke DeMiguel compiled 19 assists in Castro Valley's straight-sets win (25-8, 25-10, 25-10) against Mt. Eden. Castro Valley didn't allow a set against San Leandro (25-14, 25-16, 25-13). Senior DeMiguel recorded 17 kills and 17 assists. Fellow senior Kaylea Ott compiled 23 assists and six aces.
