In several national studies over the past decade, students at risk of dropping out cite participation in the arts as their reason for staying in school. Research also shows arts education has had a measurable impact on at-risk youth in deterring delinquent behavior and truancy problems while increasing overall academic performance.
Hayward-based Soulciety is a non-profit organization that utilizes the performing arts to develop creativity and empower the lives of youth and young adults. In 2008, Soulciety was born from at-risk youth yearning to be engaged in positive and inspiring activities. The organization's programs are structured so that students not only learn various art forms but also leadership, responsibility, and the value of giving back through community service. In this way, Soulciety influences youth to become future leaders who can create a positive impact in our communities.
The organization has reached hundreds of youth locally and thousands internationally through its after-school arts mentorship program. Youth have had the opportunity to work with leading artists performing for large corporations, charity, and community events. They have also continued to build discipline and goals towards higher education and future careers.
Soulciety will hold its 1st Annual Fundraiser reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 3 in the University Union Multipurpose Room A and B on the California State University, East Bay campus. There will be a presentation about Soulciety, what the organization does for local and global communities, and opportunities to learn how to support and become involved. Donations are tax-deductible.
