Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Golf Tournament
By Julie Grabowski
Take your golf experience to new and wacky heights with the Niles Main Street Association's Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Golf Tournament. On Sunday, October 3, adults and kids alike can putt their way around Niles in a once a year sporting opportunity like no other.
The course covers six to eight neighborhood blocks with holes mostly on volunteers' front yards or driveways. Each location offers a unique theme and set up, providing a creative and diverse game that is never predictable. This year's tournament will feature the Washington Township Country Club Hole; The Putt Mondrian, a hole in the style of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian known for his black-lined grid patterns with bold colors; and see what skill sustained gardening requires at the W-hole LEAF. Balls and putters will be provided at each hole, unless golfers have a lucky favorite they prefer to bring along.
Putting through eight fun and funky holes, players make their way to the Watering Hole, where they will receive refreshments and vie for prizes for the best dressed duffer, best hole, and best overall score.
"It's a perfect family day. It's fun, it's campy; it's a fun for all ages type of event," says association board member and event chair Nancy Haylock.
Thought up by active Niles resident Laurie Manuel back in 1998, the Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Golf Tournament continues to be an anticipated event and a statement of Niles' vitality and community spirit. Last year an estimated 130 golfers turned out for the event, whose proceeds benefit the non-profit Niles Main Street Association, dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of the historic Niles District.
Tournament sponsors include Alternative Mortgage Company, Bob Wasserman, Niles Pie Company, Content Solutions, Dave and Carol Nisihara, Winsted Carpentry, Antique Treasures, Keith's Collectibles, Bite and Browse, and My Friends and I.
So pull out your craziest clothes, practice that putt, and head out to the Pink Flamingo Pee Wee Golf Tournament where laughter and fun win every time.
Tickets are available for purchase on the day of the event at the Nile Cafˇ, located at 121 "I" Street. Adults are $10, and children $5; under six are free. Watering Hole refreshments are included in ticket price. For more information contact Nancy Haylock at (510) 795-8670.
