Walkathon to raise money for Sunol Glen
By Alyson Whitaker
On Friday, October 1, Sunol Glen students will get a little extra time outdoors as they participate in the 18th annual Sunol Glen Walkathon. The event is organized by the Sunol Glen Community Club (Sunol's parent/teacher organization), and is the main fall fundraiser for the school.
The Community Club subsidizes many programs and events that would otherwise be cut due to a lack of state and federal funding. Last year when cuts threatened to eliminate the art and music program, the community rallied and raised more than $80,000 in a Spring Pledge Drive. The outpouring of support from parents and community members alike was overwhelming.
The Walkathon is an opportunity for students to participate in raising money for the programs that directly benefit them. Students collect pledges from friends and family, and then walk laps around the school during the event. Organizers try to keep it fun and instill in the kids a feeling of inclusion and support. Corporate sponsorships are available at any level, and sponsors are included on the official event T-shirt.
In addition to being a fundraising opportunity for the school, this year's Walkathon is also an opportunity to celebrate the school's API score-up 23 points to 909 in 2010. County Superintendent of Education Sheila Jordan will make an appearance at the event, to congratulate students and staff for their hard work.
Sunol Glen Walkathon Friday, October 1 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. Sunol Glen School 11601 Main Street, Sunol (925) 862-2026 For sponsorship information, contact Alyson Whitaker at alysonwhitaker@mac.com.
