Newark Memorial takes water polo tourney title

By Giovanni Albanese Jr.

Newark Memorial High School girls water polo team got off to a great start to its 2010 season. In its own girls water polo tourney held on Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept. 11, the Lady Cougars outscored their opponents by a combined 47-7 clip en route to the championship.

To open the games, Newark took on Piedmont Hills, allowing just a pair of goals in the second quarter, while scoring six, four, five and five in their match for the 20-2 final.

Newark's second match proved to be its closest of the three they played over the weekend. Going up against Pinole Valley, the Cougars allowed a single goal in each of the four quarters. Fortunately, they were able to tally two, three, four and one over their four quarters for the 10-4 victory.

And in the championship contest, the Lady Cougars took on Liberty High School. Newark allowed a goal in the first quarter, but didn't yield a goal the rest of the match, tacking onto their 6-1 first-quarter lead. They finished with a 17-1 win and the tournament title.

Newark will next take to the pool on Sept. 22 at home against Alhambra High School.
