A 26-year-old Brentwood area man was the victim of Newark's third homicide this year. Julius Hughes, was found dead behind a business in Newark. Police found the body surrounded by bushes, trees and a small brick fence within an embankment on Monday morning, September 6 on Gateway Boulevard. According to Commander Robert Douglas, Newark PD, the black male victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Based on autopsy results by the Alameda County coroner's bureau received on Tuesday afternoon, September 7, Hughes death could be connected to a pool party at a nearby hotel the previous night. At approximately 8:40 p.m. on Sunday night gunshots were heard at 8200 Gateway Boulevard in the parking lot of W Suites Hotel. No victims were reported that night by area hospitals. "There are no known suspects at this time. The shooting on September 5 was in the parking lot; shell casings have been found in the parking lot," Detective Carroll told TCV. "The victim died from a single gunshot wound to his head/neck area," he said.
Approximately 300-400 people attended the "Pool Party" event at the Hotel. An outside assist was requested by Newark Police from Union City PD and Fremont PD. Newark Police are investigating the event to see if the proper permits were obtained to hold the event. Hotel management advised police that they had already closed the pool party but people continued to loiter in the area.
