Prep fall sports round up

Girls Volleyball

Girl's volleyball off to an early start for the 2010 fall season. Tuesday, Aug. 31, saw Washington High School Huskies defeat Moreau Catholic High School Mariners, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21). Konami Yokoyama led Washington with 12 kills while Chessy Santeramo had 10. Emily Marden contributed 25 assists for the Huskies.

Also on the Aug. 31, Irvington High School won at Hayward High School 3-0; American High School beat Arroyo High School at home, 3-1; and Athenian High School of Danville traveled to Fremont Christian High School and came away with a 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-14, 25-21).

On Wednesday, Sept. 1, California School for the Deaf coached by Karina Pedersen defeated Pescadero High School on the road, 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-16). Alexandrina Brinkley-Green had 16 kills for CSD, Esperanza Dillard 13 digs and Malage Leblanc nine assists.

Milpitas High School Trojans of coach Jeff Lamb opened the season with a 3-1 loss on Sept. 2 at Silver Creek High School of San Jose. Milpitas and Independence High School of San Jose then hosted the 32-team Spikefest I Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 4.

Milpitas opened with a 2-0 loss to Mountain View High School, defeated Willow Glenn High School of San Jose, 2-1, then had 2-0 loses to Castilleja of Palo Alto, Los Altos and San Benito of Hollister high schools. In the loss to San Benito for 23rd place, the scores were 25-13, 25-12. Presentation High School of San Jose defeated Archbishop Mitty High School of San Jose 2-0 (25-21, 25-20) for the championship.


Girls Tennis

In girls tennis action last week, coach Rose Borja's Moreau Catholic Mariners defeated James Logan High School, 5-2, on Wednesday, Sept. 1, then beat Presentation, 4-3, the next day in the San Jose heat.

Singles play against Logan, saw Moreau's Nicole Dawang win 6-3, 6-2 playing No. 1; Jana Lee won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2; Lisa Wilson lost 7-6 (5), 6-2 at No. 3; and at No. 4 Leia hn Drake won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

No. 1 doubles play had the Mariner's Delanti Dumpit/Gabby Blanco lose 6-2, 6-3; at No. 2 doubles Eleanor Labarbera/Marissa Phelan won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4; and Tricia Dones/Victoria Vergara were victorious 6-4, 7-6 (5) at No.3.

Presentation victory saw Dawang and Lee win 1 and 2 singles again, 7-6, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-4 respectively; Dumpit, playing at No. 3 singles, and Drake at No. 4 both lost, 6-3, 6-2 and 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8). No. 1 doubles saw Blanco/Wilson lose 6-4, 6-1; while Labarbera/Phelan, No. 2 and Dones/Vergara, No. 3 doubles both won, 6-0, 6-2 and 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 respectively.


Girls Golf

Moreau Catholic's Dave Baptist saw his girls golf team defeat Arroyo 204-222 on Sept. 2 played at the par 30 Mission Hills Course. Medalist was the Mariners' Jessica Salas shooting a 32. Dana Patterson of Arroyo was second at 33 and Christine Marzan of Moreau shot a 38. Mariners' Carinna Mendoza came in at 45 and Dianne Panlilio at 46.


Boys Soccer

Boys soccer last week had Fremont Christian tie a pair of games. On Tuesday, Aug. 31, they hosted Stuart Hall College Prep of San Francisco and tied 1-1. Then Thursday Fremont traveled to Valley Christian High School of Dublin and came away with a 2-2 tie.
