Community college sports recap

By Gary van den Heuvel

The Ohlone College men's soccer team posted their first win last week, but followed that with a humbling loss at Marin College.

Coach Jan Nordmo's squad, looking to continue their improvement after last year's 11-9 won-loss mark, evened their record at 1-1 with their home-opening 2-1 win over Shasta College on Tuesday, Aug. 31. Sophomore George Mayer II scored the Renegades first goal in the first half, and goalkeeper Elmer Ceja was stellar in the net, making three saves by leaving his feet to tip the ball over the net.

Jose Ulloa put Ohlone ahead 2-0 with a goal off a long-range volley. Ulloa's goal proved to be much needed insurance - Shasta scored in the 70th minute, but Ohlone was able to hold off the Knights for the 2-1 final score.

"Muy uglio! It was bad," was how coach Nordmo described his team's next game, an 8-1 loss to the Marin Mariners. "The ghost of seasons past reared its ugly head," lamented Nordmo.

The Renegades started fast, moving the ball cleanly through the Marin defense, but unable to convert their aggression into goals. The Marin deluge started in the ninth minute with a one-on-one goal by Roberto Hernandez, who placed the ball just past the reach of Ceja, who was playing hurt and later left the game due to injury.

Ohlone's goal came in the 48th minute when Mayer scored off an assist from Nicholas Sanchez-Torres. By this point, the score was 3-1. Marin, led by Hernandez's two goals and Nelson Cruz's two goals and assist, dominated the second half for the 8-1 rout.

Chabot College's men's soccer team ended their opening week with a win and a loss, both by 1-0 scores. The Gladiators opened the season on Aug. 31 on the road against the same Marin team who would later in the week rout Ohlone.

Coach Tony Igwe's squad was able to stifle the Mariner offense in a way that Ohlone was not; the two-goalie tandem of Anthony Ahedo (who played the first half) and Rafael Campos (second half) and a stalwart defensive effort kept the ball out of the Gladiator net, and Chabot's lone goal, by Jose Loya, proved to be enough for the win.

Igwe's defense put on another good performance on Friday, Sept. 3, in their home opener against Modesto. Unfortunately, Modesto's defense proved just as stingy as their guests. It was Fernando Madrigal's second-half goal which gave Modesto the 1-0 win.

The Chabot women's soccer team began their season inauspiciously, taking a 7-0 beating on Friday, Sept. 3, against Modesto.

After a disappointing 2009 season which included only one conference win, Ohlone's women's volleyball team is expecting to improve. Opening the season with a dominating road win over Laney College on Sept. 1 by scores of 25-9, 25-8, 25-11 certainly have not dimmed those hopes. Led by returning sophomores Jayme Leftridge, Brenda Calara and Stephanie Cao, the Renegades next see action on Friday, Sept. 10, in the Cougar Classic in Alameda. The starting times for the games are yet to be determined.

Chabot's women's volleyball team started their season quickly on Sept. 1 against Cuesta College, winning the first set 25-15 before dropping the next three (by scores of 25-16, 25-10, 25-17). They did bounce back the following day, beating Marin at home in straight sets.
