Books more than paper and words
By Lucinda Bender
The Bay Area Book Artists exhibit at the Olive Hyde Gallery will provide insight into the world of book arts. Over 40 artists will display the best of their works, books in all shapes and sizes. An extensive and eclectic show that will interest all ages, the forms and styles are varied, but all artworks are books or book-related. The exhibition provides a good overview of the diversity which makes up the Bay Area Book Artists (BABA). Many of the artworks are new, shown here for the first time.
BABA is a group of independent artists bound together by a passion for book arts. The artists support and mentor each other by nurturing artistic growth and talents of books artists through shared ideas, techniques and resources. Their goal is to expand their horizons by making books, organizing exhibitions and increasing awareness of book artists and book arts. BABA volunteers respect diversity and honor the contributions of others. Since 1995, BABA has presented exhibitions at local galleries and museums. In 2002, BABA members organized the first Book Arts Jam at Foothill College. This event has entertained and educated the public each year since.
Book Art Jam is an annual celebration of Book Art, Print Art and Paper Art, scheduled to be held in the Student Center at the Foothill College Los Altos Hills Campus on October 16. As a book fair, it provides space to individual artists and organizations and features demonstrations, hands on activities and panel discussions.
