Tips for job-seekers
Submitted By Jenna Simenic
What are the most important steps you can take to advance your career in today's job market? Many job-seekers believe that heading back to school is the key for success; however, according to career expert and author Alexandra Levit, recently named Money Magazine's "Online Career Expert of the Year," there are specific steps individuals must implement to advance.
Levit recently hosted a Career Conference sponsored by DeVry University where leading industry experts convened to discuss this topic and obtain advice that job-seekers can implement to succeed in an uncertain economy.
Some of Alexandra's tips included:
1. Know which fields are in-demand and align these with your areas of interest. For example, the fields of healthcare management & technology, accounting, and information security are among those career fields in which the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects above-average growth potential over the next several years.
2. Perform a cost benefit analysis to determine how an advanced degree will increase earning potential.
3. Take necessary standardized tests. There are many websites to help prepare students for required exams.
4. Form a support group to ease the transition of returning to school from the workforce. Plan regular meetings with five to eight people where you can talk comfortably about what brought you to the decision to continue your education.
