The new Barbara Lee Senior Center is set for enrollment beginning Wednesday, September 1, providing recreational, educational and wellness activities for seniors. The center relocated this month from the old Sal Cracolice Building site on South Abel Street to the remodeled facility on North Milpitas Boulevard. Conveniently located, the center is close to Milpitas City Hall and adjacent to a park. The 21,795-square-foot large facility houses three classrooms, community room, a fitness center, game room, dining room, kitchen and coffee kiosk.
This represents a niche where seniors can gather to meet friends for coffee, attend educational lectures and enjoy playing games such as pool, chess and checkers. More than 1,600 seniors will have a place to relax and enjoy activities due to the tireless efforts of City of Milpitas personnel: supervisor; program coordinator; clerical personnel; case managers; nutrition site manager and food server, and a van driver to bus Milpitas residents who are part of the nutrition program.
Membership runs from September 1 through August 30 of each year. Fees are $12 for Milpitas residents and $30 for non-residents including discounts on certain activities and events, the mailing of a bi-monthly Senior Center Newsletter, and supplemental insurance while attending Senior Center programs. Many programs and activities, such as classes, trips, socials and a weekday lunch program are offered to members year-round.
The Center promotes healthy lifestyles for all fitness levels through fitness programs. Star Trackers Walking Group is a walking program that allows participants to track how far they walk each week. For more information please visit www.ci.milpitas.ca.gov and click Recreation under Departments.
